Fredricka Joyner

My experience growing up in the Southwest has shaped my color palette, at once vibrant and earthy, and my fascination with materiality. I create mixed-media images using rich color, layers, patterns, reflections, manipulated photographs, topographical maps, and thematic cartography. My work engages with social imbalances, inequities, and environmental concerns, exploring the complexities of the world we inhabit.

In my new body of work, I explore my belief that access to beauty is a right, not a privilege. I am drawn to humble, ubiquitous materials, such as paper bags from the pharmaceutical industry and Amazon packing paper, which connect my work to complicated and sometimes controversial aspects of contemporary life. By finding beauty in these materials, I seek to place it within the imperfect and perilous world we inhabit.

As our communities and social systems become increasingly polarized and environmental deterioration continues, I ask: How do we dismantle what is not working, take its components, and build something new that we have not yet imagined?
